Types of bricks: 5 reasons why Maliouris Group's perforated bricks are at the top

Bricks are undoubtedly one of the most basic materials in the built environment. There are two main categories or types of bricks on the market today, perforated and solid bricks.

At Maliouris Group we produce a total of 14 different perforated bricks, which are divided into groups according to their properties and the sectors in which they are used. From the new generation of thermal insulation bricks to vertical hollow bricks, they all stand out for their properties.

Bricks can also be classified according to their characteristics or dimensions. However, in this article we will, as mentioned above, go through the two main types of bricks: perforated or bricks with holes and solid bricks.

By analyzing their characteristics we will see why the bricks with holes of Maliouris Group have been recognized as leading products in the construction industry and we will list their advantages compared to solid bricks, which are considered obsolete technology.

Types of bricks: the series with holes of Maliouris Group

Today Maliouris Group produces a complete range of bricks (as far as the types of bricks are concerned, they belong exclusively to those with holes), including thermal insulation bricks, blocks, but also what's known in the market as thermoblock brick.

To them is also added the category of the new generation vertically perforated bricks, Climablock thermal insulating bricks.

However, let us look in detail at the range of products by dividing them into two subcategories (or types of bricks), namely horizontal hole bricks and vertically perforated bricks:

Bricks with horizontal holes

This subcategory includes bricks with relatively small dimensions, which are mainly used in traditional building methods, but also in small constructions. As an example, we can mention that Maliouris Brick 12 is often preferred by builders on the Cyclades islands, as well as in areas of Southern Greece.

You will also find a brick with 19 cm length which is used for a specific type of masonry. In addition, this category includes some of the most popular types of bricks for interior masonry as well as for renovation. More specifically, Maliouris Brick 250 is used to a large extent in the Balkans, while Maliouris Brick 9A is usually preferred in Northern Greece.

Analyzing the types of bricks, it should be mentioned that in Maliouris Group we also have bricks with large dimensions, which are used almost exclusively in exterior masonry.

Maliouris Brick 18 (the well-known blocks) is probably the most popular in construction, especially in Northern Greece. Also, Maliouris Brick 330 is most often preferred in Albania and Bulgaria, while ECO 20 & ECO 25, are insulating bricks (you will also find it as thermoblock bricks or thermal insulation bricks) and large in size.

Bricks with vertical holes

Vertical hollow bricks stand out for their advantages, such as energy saving, high mechanical strength and noise protection. They are high-quality thermal insulation bricks, which are considered ideal for exterior masonry. As with most products, the prices of vertical perforated bricks or orthoblocks vary according to their dimensions and properties.

These include the new generation of thermal insulation bricks Climablock Eco, which combine durability, energy saving and sound insulation, while creating a pleasant environment.

Thermal insulating bricks are a popular choice in many constructions, as they create a pleasant microclimate within a building or residence. It should be mentioned here that in thermal insulation bricks prices usually depend on the quality and the technology they incorporate, as these new generation bricks act both as thermal insulation elements and as heat reservoirs contributing to energy saving.

Solid bricks

Solid bricks have few applications in modern times and this is because they lack the advantages offered by the perforated bricks of the Maliouris Group. In fact, solid bricks are divided into ceramic and concrete bricks, with the second ones being hardly used in Greece.

Solid ceramic bricks (old-style brick) are used in very few types of construction, as they are considered old technology. Today, solid bricks are mainly found in exposed decorative masonry, in cobbled streets and traditional wood-burning ovens, in furnaces and in fireplaces. As far as concrete solid bricks are concerned, they are primarily used in Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates.

The prices of solid bricks are lower, but this is justified by the fact that they lack properties such as thermal insulation, sound insulation and strength. In addition, you will find solid bricks on the market at prices determined by the purpose for which they will be used, e.g. for wall decoration or perhaps for cobbled streets. Here it is good to highlight that in solid bricks the price varies, also based on their composition, i.e. whether they are ceramic or concrete.

Perforated bricks: Advantages

In this section we will look at the advantages of the Maliouris Group's bricks with holes compared to solid bricks:

Excellent thermal insulation

The Maliouris Group bricks have horizontal or vertical holes, which trap air acting as thermal insulation. Each brick has different thermal insulation properties and based on these, it is used in different types of constructions. On the contrary, the solid brick of the old type does not offer good thermal insulation and this is one of the reasons why it has not been preferred by contractors and construction companies for years.

Wider range of applications

The bricks of Maliouris Group have a wide range of applications, as they have many advantages over solid bricks. In particular, they are used in the majority of building constructions, as they have properties that contribute to the creation of buildings with better characteristics. In contrast, the older technology used in solid bricks prevents builders from using them on a large scale because they do not offer significant advantages.

Noise protection & fire resistance

The perforated bricks of Maliouris Group offer protection from noise and fire resistance. It is worth mentioning that due to the high mass and thermal inertia of the new generation bricks, heat transmission is significantly delayed from fire compartment to fire compartment. This makes them a top choice for any construction need.

Healthier environment

By choosing Maliouris bricks you choose products that contribute to the creation of a healthy environment in your building or residence. These are bricks that do not release toxic gases or hazardous substances and radiation. Also, just as importantly, they do not release hazardous substances into drinking or groundwater.

Less weight

The light weight of the construction materials is one of the key factors that many builders take into consideration and as a result they prefer the perforated bricks by Maliouris Group. Solid bricks are heavier and are considered unsuitable for modern construction needs.

Maliouris Group

The bricks of Maliouris Group are products that promote the modern way of building, offering properties that improve safety and the quality of life inside them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between perforated and solid bricks?

Perforated bricks have holes that make them lighter, thermally insulating and soundproof, while solid bricks are heavier and are mainly used for decorative purposes or in special constructions.

What are the main advantages of Maliouris Group bricks compared to other bricks on the market?

Βricks from Maliouris Group offer excellent thermal insulation, sound insulation, fire protection, lighter weight and create a healthier environment.

Which type of bricks is best for exterior masonry?

Vertical hollow bricks, such as Climablock Eco, are considered ideal for exterior masonry as they offer energy savings, high strength and sound insulation.

What is the difference between bricks with horizontal and vertical holes?

Bricks with horizontal holes are smaller and are mainly used in traditional constructions, while bricks with vertical holes offer better thermal and sound insulation, making them ideal for exterior walls.

Are thermal insulating bricks more expensive than solid bricks? Are they worth the cost of the investment?

Thermal insulating bricks are typically more expensive due to their technology, but the energy saving they offer reduce heating and cooling costs in the long run, making them a smart investment.
