Types of tiles: 6 reasons why cement tiles are superior to ceramic tiles

There are many types of roof tiles on the market, each one with its own advantages. You will hear, among other things, about Roman tiles or Byzantine tiles, which are ceramic, while there is also the category of concrete tiles.

At this article we will talk about ceramic tiles and we will compare them with the ALMA cement tiles of Maliouris Group. It is an innovative product, the result of long-term research aimed at meeting modern construction requirements.

At Maliouris Group you will find concrete tiles at affordable prices, while their excellent quality is a guarantee for structures that remain unchanged over time.

Types of roof tiles

In Greece there are available ceramic tiles, which are separated into four main types according to their properties and shape, ranging from Roman tiles to Dutch tiles. These are the following types of tiles:

Roman tiles

Roman roof tiles are perhaps the most widespread of the four types of tiles that we will mention. They have a very good ability to remove rainwater and are easy to install. Roman roof tiles are used in many constructions and are available in several colours.

Byzantine tiles

Byzantine roof tiles have a more traditional design and are therefore often used in traditional settlements, as well as churches. In addition, Byzantine tiles have a low water permeability index and are used in areas with heavy rainfall.

French tiles

French tiles are considered to be of highly aesthetic value and are often found in mountainous areas. The characteristic shape of French tiles contributes significantly to the removal of snow from the roof.

Dutch tiles

Dutch roof tiles are quite similar to Roman tiles, but have smaller curves. And these are included in roof tiles with good watertightness and nice design.

Cement tiles

Cement roof tiles are a separate category, of high aesthetics and technology, which are superior in every field compared to ceramics tiles. More specifically, solid roof tiles ALMA, have a number of advantages that rank them among the best in terms of durability, life span and uniformity.

Many types of roof tiles are available on the market, such as Byzantine or Roman tiles, at prices that vary according to their quality. However, ALMA cement roof tiles have proven their superiority in quality, functionality and design.

Roof tiles: Types & Advantages

In this section we will look in detail at the advantages of concrete tiles compared to ceramic tiles:

Resistance to extreme weather conditions

Solid ALMA roof tiles stand out for their resistance to extreme weather conditions, such as intense heat, frost, snow or hail. In contrast, common types of roof tiles often crack, requiring the replacement of part of the roof.

Uniformity

A special feature that makes ALMA roof tiles unique is the process of production and drying in a mould, without firing, which gives perfect uniformity and symmetry. On the other hand, the soil used in the other types of roof tiles as well as the firing process are largely responsible for the deviations in dimensions.

Perfect application

The ALMA cement roof tile is available in two profiles, which have a perfect fit to any type of roof and in addition there is a wide variety of special parts to achieve an excellent result. In other types of roof tiles, deviations are often observed, which may cause problems.

Watertightness

In the section "Roof tiles: types & advantages" it is important to mention the watertightness. In particular, ALMA roof tile offers zero water absorption and absolute water tightness. On the contrary in common tile cracking allows water to flow in.

Colour homogeneity

Roof tiles and types, depending on their style and quality, are plentiful on the market. However, the quartz sand used in the ALMA solid tiles is characterised by its consistent quality ensuring absolute uniformity in colours even in different batches. This is very difficult to observe in common tile, as the quality of the soil varies.

Ecological colours

In ALMA cement roof tiles are used eco-friendly colours, which reflect UV radiation and ensure a stable temperature. In the other types of roof tiles, moisture absorption is common, which may lead to the development of fungi.

All the advantages mentioned above, from durability to uniformity or ecological colours, make ALMA roof tiles - compared to other types of tiles - a reliable investment for any type of construction.

Types of roof tiles depending on the material

There are other types of tiles on the market, which are made with different materials and cover different needs. However, unlike solid cement tiles, they are not widely used.

Synthetic or plastic tiles, as well as metal tiles, are used in several constructions or in prefabricated roofs, as well as asphalt tiles, which offer a lot of flexibility. Also, solar tiles, which incorporate photovoltaic technology for energy production, are an additional category. Let's take a closer look at them:

Synthetic or plastic tiles

Plastic roof tiles in sheets or otherwise synthetic tiles are made of materials such as PVC, ASA or polycarbonate and their greatest advantages include their light weight, relatively low price and easy installation. Plastic roof tiles can be used in any type of construction, but are usually chosen for sheds, balconies and kiosks. However, synthetic tiles (or plastic tiles) are not considered particularly resistant to extreme weather conditions, do not offer good thermal insulation and they are not environmentally friendly.

Solar tiles

Solar roof tiles (like plastic roof tiles) are considered to be new technology products. More specifically, solar tiles are usually made of unbreakable glass, turning the roof of a building into a solar collector and sunlight into electricity. In that way, a roof with solar tiles can give a house energy autonomy. However, it is a solution with high purchase and installation costs and requires frequent maintenance to ensure that they function properly.

Asphalt tiles

Asphalt roof tiles can be used in all types of constructions, but they are considered an ideal solution for areas with heavy rainfall and snowfall, as one of their main characteristics is the watertightness they offer. Depending on the material they are made of and the way they are installed, they provide high resistance to extreme temperatures and a relatively long life span. Asphalt tiles are usually installed on roofs with a high slope, as this allows them to best perform all their properties.

Metal tiles

Metal tiles are usually made of steel or aluminium and are another option for roofing. They are commonly used in metal buildings and sports facilities, as well as in prefabricated houses, and their key features include minimal maintenance and no mould.

ALMA roof tiles and final conclusion

Solid tile ALMA is a high-quality innovative product which is produced using natural raw materials and with respect for the environment.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that in cement roof tiles prices are extremely competitive, as it is a product that provides a multitude of advantages and an unlimited lifespan.

This is why ALMA tiles are superior to other types of tiles, whether they are Roman or French tiles. The solid tiles of Maliouris Group are placed among the leading products on the market and are very popular in Greece and abroad.
